Driving northward in the hope of leaving behind her old life and painful memories, Clare Bowers takes a wrong turn in the mist and ends up in a ditch, from which she is rescued and taken to stay at Moorlands Farm. The owners have had their own tragedies in the past, and there is still a bitter feud between them and the Laytons at the nearby farm. Then Clare meets the darkly handsome Richard Layton, and her past threatens to overtake her again.
